7th Heaven Secrets (2002 October Popstar!)

This is it! This season of The WB's "7th Heaven" will be the last for hottie David Gallagher, who has vowed to leave the show in order to attend film school once his duties are done. It won't be the same show without him! We quizzed the TV wonderboy about the show, its family-close cast and the future of David Gallagher.

Popstar!: We heard you're leaving after this season to go to school. What is high school like now? How do your classmates react to you - do they support you, hate you or do they not even know what's going on with you?
David: There's a little bit of everything. There are the classmates that are really supportive and then there are the classmates that I really don't think know what's going on and then there are other people that don't like what's going on.

Popstar!: If this is the last year of "7th Heaven" for you, does that make you sad or are you looking forward to it?
David: I am looking forward to it. One is because I'm a senior in high school and I'm taking six classes instead of seven, which is nice, taking more fine arts classes and things I'm interested in. School is less of a pain and more interesting. Hopefully, I'm gonna be given some pretty good storylines because Barry will be gone and Jessie will be there for only a few episodes. For the most part, it will be me, Adam and Beverley...and MacKenzie, Steve and Catherine. And Happy the dog! [laughs] I'll be getting more attention and carrying more stories. I'm just looking forward to having a good time next year. I wanna just lay back and enjoy.

Popstar!: What are you like to work with? Are you really outgoing, or do you keep to yourself?
David: I'm the first actor to hang out with the crew - I'm not into this "leave me alone I'll be in my trailer". It's amazing how quickly a crew turns into your family. With the movie I did called "Little Secrets", we were there for a month and it was hard - it's never impersonal when something ends. On "7th Heaven", every once in a while you get hit with a change in the department and you're just like, "Oh, man...". It's like you lost a brother. But things like that happen.

Popstar!: Speaking of brothers, are you really the terrorizer you said you were last issue?
David: [laughs] My little brother at his age is much bigger than I was at his age so I'm waiting for the day when he gets big enough to beat me up. I tell him I'm getting my shots in until he can beat me up back. But he looks up to me a lot and we hang out quite a bit. There's always a fight going on with the kids in my family, but it's always over quick.

Popstar!: Your TV brother -Barry Watson- recently announced he has Hodgkin's Disease. How did you hear about his condition? Did you know about it?
David: Actually, to be perfectly honest the news got broken to me by a stranger - I had no idea. I was at a club and I was dancing. This girl came over to me and said, "Are you on "7th Heaven"?" and I was like [annoyed tone], "Yeah" and then she said, "You know Barry?' and I went [even more annoyed], "Yeah" and then she said, "Oh, is he really sick? I heard he had Hodgkin's Disease" I went home and my parents told me. It was a real shock - it hit me when it hit everyone else.

Popstar!: Do you have any memories from the series that are particularly emotional or that stand out for you?
David: I try not to get too emotionally wrapped up in what my job is that day, so I don't have too many emotionally impactive stories to tell...but I do have some favorite episodes that we did! One of them was quite recent - the drunk episode. How fun was that?! I got, like, five or six pages of stumbling around and slurring my words and acting like a retard - it was a lot of fun. I had never been drunk before, so it was a crazy challenge they threw at me and I wasn't quite ready, so the first day I psyched myself out and decided I couldn't do it. They were like, "Shut up - just do it!" so I gave it a shot and it sucked so they were like, "Don't do that, try this" so I was like, "All right" and we redid it till I got the feel for it after a few tries and I think it turned out really great. People have come over to me and said I did a really good job acting drunk and then they tell me a story. [laughs]
